Entry #5: Mayhem Makes My Sides Hurt
We're all accident-prone at some point in our lives. It's in our nature. One way or another, we will make mistakes that may cost us more than we think. Take Mr. Mayhem for example. In every Allstate ad, you typically see on television, he's always promoting insurance, whether it be home or auto, by showing what insurance can actually help with regardless of the circumstance.
In "Beauty Blogger - Allstate Mayhem", he's promoting home insurance coverage to avoid, catering to a surprisingly younger audience in the process through impersonating an aspiring beauty blogger on YouTube, using verbiage like "a ton of likes" and "thumbs down emoji" when the flat iron he uses catches fire against his towel. You can tell because of the setting of his room, the fairy lights, pink walls, and makeup brushes in front of his vanity. He also is seen wearing under-eye gel masks while curling his hair. Typically these items would be associated with a young woman as a YouTuber. In this advertisement, he's promoting the more millennial lifestyle, showing that having the right kind of insurance is vital no matter what age you are. By catering to younger adults, the idea of "selling" home insurance is more widely spread.
All of the adverts regarding Mayhem are undoubtedly hilarious, giving comic relief to brutal accidents that can happen often in our everyday lives. While providing the side-splitting humor, he explains that by giving yourself coverage for certain accidents will save you money in the long run, so you won't have to worry about paying extra money for the inevitable. The tone he gives is mainly satire but his voice is always so serious when purposefully putting himself in harm's way. It still effectively displays the severity of his mistakes while also providing a sense of humor in the sense that it's relatable and happens to everyone. It's probably why this company has been in such good standing for decades! They appeal to everyone in a casual manner that anyone can really relate to, and don't minimize the reach of audience types.

ReplyDeleteI too did this advertisement and found it to be amusing as it does reach most of those beauty gurus out there calling them out making sure they have Home Owners insurance.
