Entry #10: I'm Changing My Major to Joan

If you don't know the musical reference, we can't be friends

Kidding! But I figure as our last blog of the semester, it's only fitting that I talk about a major decision I've made these last few weeks.

As you know, at the beginning of the semester, I told you all my aspirations to be a cosmetic chemist and one day, be able to create products of my own. Well...that's changed. Drastically. Let me give a bit more background.

What I never mentioned much throughout your time of knowing me is that, after dropping out of college when I was 18, I got a unique job as a portrait photographer at Picture People. I thought it was a scam at first, but it was the first job I had that seriously gave me the tools to be able to talk to people. It also made me fall in love with working with children as well. I ended up working there for two years before changing my career to esthetics.

As a child, I've always wanted to be a teacher. And as an esthetician, I was able to educate others about their skin, and what products would suit them best for their skin type and concerns.

But lately, I've been thinking about a very prominent thing in my life that I haven't noticed until recently. I love educating others, and that's always been the most consistent thing in my life. But math is also something that I've loved ever since I saw numbers for the first time. And I want to make kids love math again. I hear too many people tell me how much they hate it, but it's so much more important than one might think. And if I was able to successfully make people care about cosmetics, I think it's worth a shot to be a teacher and be the path to success for other kids.

So I'm changing my major to secondary education mathematics so I can be a math teacher! I'm extremely excited about this new journey in my life, and I'm sure it won't be the last. But for now, a new adventure awaits. Thank you all for sticking with me these past few months. It's been quite an honor being able to entertain you with my (hopefully improved) rhetoric!

See you on the other side, Sunflower Socialites!

  1. This is my first time seeing your blog and let me tell you, YOUR BLOG IS SO CUTE! Your posts to the layouts are so cute. I actually felt this post on a different level. Growing up I was so good at math and everyone around me said that they hated it to. I never hated math though and I thought it was actually fun. I hope you have fun doing what you love! I enjoyed reading all your posts!

    1. Oh my gosh, thank you so much Alyssa! That's so sweet of you. I had so much fun with this project. I've done blogs before, so I wanted to stick to what I've always liked, but make it my own at the same time. And I'm glad to meet a fellow math lover! Thank you so much for reading.
